LESSON THREE – “Walking into Weakness”
A BEGINNING PLACE –
* Hearing and following God’s call must start with developing the heart of a Servant! * When Jesus washed the apostles’ feet (Jn. 13:14-17), he was modeling an attitude necessary for a true disciple. * We should know that God’s call on our lives will almost certainly take us out of our comfort zones. * We all contrive ways of resisting God’s call.
DIG DEEPER -
* The author spends a good bit of time in this chapter recounting God’s call on Moses (Exodus 3&4). God wanted to use Moses to lead the nation of Israel out of their slavery in Egypt.
MOSES’ CONCERNS 3:11 “Who am I, that I should go?” 3:13 “Who are you?” 4:10 “I am slow of speech and tongue” 4:13 “Please send someone else”
GOD’S ANSWERS 3:12 “I will be with you.” 3:14-15 “I AM has sent me to you.” 4:11-12 “Who gave you your mouth?” 4:14-16 “Have your brother, Aaron, go with you.”
Highlight a couple of points from Moses’ experience: o Moses was inquiring about God’s character, His faithfulness, and His trustworthiness. Read section “Who Are You?” on page 52 & 53. o Moses was not left to carry out this mission by himself. He had a ministry partner.
* How high is the “play it safe” factor in your life right now? * When asked to step out of your comfort zone, what is your tendency when you come face-to-face with your human weaknesses or feelings of inadequacy?
_____ I withdraw from others. _____ I want to quit. _____ I “power up” my own strength. _____ I project a false confidence. _____ I get angry, frustrated, and defensive. _____ I am overwhelmed by anxiety. _____ Other reactions:
* The apostle Paul attended the school of weakness. There he learned a classic paradox of spiritual life. He describes it in 2 Cor. 12:7-10. What is the essence of this truth?
CONCLUSION:
From the standpoint of your own spiritual formation, what has been the value of God allowing you to grapple with weakness? How has God used your weakness to allow you to help others?
