Session Four
Article One – “Conversation Evangelism” Stafford North
Article Two – “Reenter the World You’re Trying to Reach” Paul Borthwick
Article Three – “The Discipline of the Secret” Brennan Manning
Application Point for Session Four
In these three articles, learners will be challenged to consider –
• How can we more effectively share our faith in our daily conversations with others?
• How many significant friendships do you have outside of your circle of Christian friends?
• How do these articles portray the difference between “picture people” and “drama people?”

Session Four – “Becoming Evangelistic People”
5 Minutes
Welcome & Prayer
10 Minutes
OPEN
How many of you this week in a conversation have shared your faith with someone not a Christian? If not, what kept you from doing this?
How many of you want to interject more talk about spiritual things into your normal conversations with friends and associates?
How many of you have less than five (reasonably close) non-Christian friends?
15-20 Minutes
DIG
Many of us have fewer than five close friends outside of our Christian fellowship. Do you agree that we minimize our influence when we insist on remaining in the safety of our Christian subculture?
Even beyond this point, in the article entitled “Reenter the World You’ve Trying to Reach,” the author quotes Dick Staub (page 122) who identifies three negative postures of Christians in the world.
Discuss these points and respond to these observations.
What is your reaction to the quote from Sam Shoemaker – “In the Great Commission the Lord has called us to be, like Peter, fishers of men. We’ve turned the commission around so that . . . we have become merely keepers of the aquarium. Occasionally, I take some fish out of your fishbowl and put them into mine, and you do the same with my bowl. But we’re tending the same fish”?
What is going to motivate you to get out there in the world and build new friendships and reach out to people and share your faith?
20 Minutes
REFLECT
What are you going to do this week to associate with those who are non-Christians such that you can share your faith?
How did you feel when you read Brennan Manning’s words–
We have made it too easy to be a Christian. The sole requirements are the recitation of a creed and attendance at a local church where there is no community and little fellowship. Christianity used to be risky business; it is no longer. Cost-free discipleship produces wimps . . .”
