4 - Johnsons and Hartmans: Family Vacation |

For months the Johnson family had been planning a summer vacation to Roatan, Honduras. They were looking forward to snorkeling, scuba diving and soaking up the sun. Although the Johnsons anticipated a much needed week of rest and relaxation, they also scheduled time for daily devotionals and found out the meeting times of the local church.
The Saturday morning finally arrived for the Johnson’s trip. While waiting to board the plane at the airport, they saw another family, the Hartmans, from their home church. The Hartmans also had been planning a summer trip to Honduras – a mission trip to partner with local Christians to work on the construction of an orphanage in a remote area. The two families enjoyed visiting with each other on the plane and, upon arriving in Honduras, parted for the week.
On Sunday, the Johnsons went to worship with the local church in Roatan. Since the service was conducted entirely in Spanish, the Johnsons could understand very little of what was said, but the enthusiastic singing and heartfelt prayers offered by the Hondurans seemed to need little translation. The Johnsons were captivated by the simplicity of the service. The open - air setting and whitewashed walls seemed to breathe fresh air into worship. After services, the Johnsons met an American couple who were going to be houseparents for the new orphanage, the same one the Hartmans were working to build. Before the conversation was over, they had made a generous contribution to the orphanage.
For the rest of the week, the Johnsons spent an equally generous amount on vacation fun – diving, boating, fishing, horseback riding, golfing and eating out. When their week was up, once again, the Johnsons met the Hartmans on the plane ride home. The Hartmans recounted details of their mission trip – digging footings, pouring concrete, teaching VBS with a Spanish translator, being filled with joy over the three souls who gave their lives to the Lord in baptism. By the time they arrived home, both families were worn out from the trip, but everyone felt good about what they had done and seen and spent.
