Taste the Honeycomb of His Word Part 1: Psalms 1, 19 Background of Psalm 1 The Psalm begins with this “generic” song of the truly happy man, happy because he delights himself in the Law of the Lord. This represents a summary of the doctrine taught throughout this book, and in the Scriptures generally (see also the Beatitudes of Matthew 5). It is probably no accident that it appears first in this collection of songs, since it provides such a beautiful introduction to them. Background of Psalm 19 Psalm 19 consists of three divisions. First (verses 1 – 6) is the revelation of God through His material works. Second (verses 7 – 11) is the more glorious revelation of God in His law. Third (verses 12 – 14) reveals the impact of these two great revelations on the writer of this song, and on all who are partakers of his faith. Please read these two Psalms aloud in class. Questions for discussion from Psalm 1 - What is the progression of steps taken away from God as revealed in Ps. 1:1? How does that apply to today’s world?
- What does it mean to “meditate”?
- Do you know of examples where one appears to be devoted to God and His word, but yet falters in life rather than prospering as this song appears to promise?
- What comfort does verse 6 give us?
Questions for discussion from Psalm 19 - What does the universe signify about God to you? (Please consider Romans 1: 18 – 21 in your answer)
- How does the Psalmist view the word of God? Why do you think it is important to him to dwell on its value?
- In your mind, in what ways is the Word of God like honey and a honeycomb?
- Why are secret faults so dangerous?
- What are “presumptuous” sins?
Assignment Try writing a song about the sweetness of God’s word. (Come on now—give it a try!!)
