LESSON NINE - “Spiritual Gifts Survey”

INTRODUCTION:

Charles Kiser last week used the analogy of “unwrapping” our spiritual gift(s). It’s a pretty neat idea to think about opening a gift that has been given to us by our Heavenly Father. There should be a good bit of excitement and anticipation about this “discovery or reaffirmation process.” As we have heard throughout this study, many of our students have admitted they’ve never gone through this exercise before. Many would admit they really don’t know their spiritual gifts. We believe this exercise will help!

While this survey is designed to help believers discover or reaffirm their gifts, please understand this is simply one means to that end. We want to be sure that everyone understands this instrument is not scientifically and/or statistically flawless; however, we do feel it can serve to clarify and invigorate your spiritual life and ministry in God’s kingdom.

Please understand, we can’t (nor should we) make a final determination about our spiritual giftedness based solely on this or any other instrument like this. In addition to this tool, there are a couple of other very practical ways to assist with this discovery process. One would be to reflect on the successes you have experienced in your past life of ministry. Consider past endeavors where God has clearly rewarded your efforts and where you have felt fruitful and fulfilled. What do those experiences have in common? What was the gift(s) you used in those endeavors?

Another important consideration in this discovery process is “How have certain gifts been affirmed or complemented by others whose opinions you value?” What do others who know you identify as your primary gifts? Consider Matthew 15:21-28; Matt. 11:11; Matt. 26:6-13; Mark 1:16-18; Acts 4:36-37; Acts 6:5-8; Acts 9:26-31; Rom. 16:1-16, 21-24;

Can it be that through prayer, meditation, and study that God will more clearly reveal these things to us? If we pray that God will help to reveal and clarify your understanding of your spiritual giftedness, does it not stand to reason that God will respond and help to distinguish these gifts and also open doors for us to use our primary gifts in service? Consider 1 Cor. 1:4-9; 2:9-16; 2 Cor. 2:14-4:18; Eph. 1:15-23; Phil. 1:3-11; 4:5-9.

Having said that, I would recommend that each teacher spend a few minutes in prayer with their class that God will bless our efforts on this day and that he will give us individually the proper spirit and clarity of mind / heart to complete this survey recognizing the weightiness of this spiritual exercise.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMINISTERING THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS SURVEY IN YOUR CLASS:

* Provide each class member with a survey and a pencil.
* Be sure everyone puts their name, teacher’s name(s), and date on the cover of their survey.
* We want everyone to complete this survey during the class period.
* This survey is designed to assist each student in discovering or reaffirming their spiritual gift(s) which will better equip them to enter into a specific ministry that more closely fits their gift(s).
* Enjoy the process. Take your time. This is not a test.
* There is no right or wrong answers, so choose the response that best answers how you feel towards each question. Answer the questions honestly and do not over analyze the questions.
* Answer the 152 questions rating each one from 0-3. Answer or gauge your response to each statement as it “least” or “most” reflects your life, actions, and/or feelings toward respective question.

0 = Not at all
1 = Little
2 = Some
3 = Much

* Please understand – “0” is not bad and “4” is not good.
* In regard to the scoring, you need to know that there is no specific number needed to “get the gift.” The gifts identified with the highest scores will reflect your primary gift areas. For most of us, there likely will be one or two dominant gifts that are identified.
* Use the example on the first page of this survey and highlight how they should respond and where they should place their answers.
* The test will probably take between 20-30 minutes for most of your people.
* It is not necessary that your students total the columns once they have completed the survey.
* Once each student completes the survey, please have them return their survey to you.
* As the teacher, you are responsible to return these surveys to Jeff Spry’s office where there will be a deposit box available.
* Let the students know they will get the results of their survey next week in class.
