March…and that means the start of autumn, right? Well, due to being in the southern hemisphere, it does in Chile. The rains of winter will be here soon. It doesn’t snow in Puerto Montt…just a cold windy rain. Good days to stay in by the fire and drink coffee.
I have jumped back into the Bible Institute with the materials prepared by Tom Hook. This semester I am spending time in a textual study of the prison epistles. I am meeting with my students two nights a week and so far the study is going over very well. I am trying to incorporate opportunities for last year’s graduates to participate in some of the teaching this year. I am always present in the classes, but sometimes some of the other men are presenting the material. Although there has been some nervousness, the two men who have taken there turns thus far have done very well. I consider this a huge step forward as I try to help some of the young Christians mature into leaders for the church.
I noticed that this Sunday will be missions emphasis week at Pleasant Valley. I just wanted to thank you all for the help that you give to works like mine around the world. We have been so blessed in the United States and it is an honor and a duty to share some of our blessings. It is constantly called to my attention the lack of wise older Christians in this part of the world. I often think of home and how many people there are that were raised in the church…learning from childhood the ways and ideals of our Lord. In fact, the foundation of our culture is interwoven with the principles of Christianity. We have much to be thankful for and much to share with this world. Our country is in a position to serve as a light to the world if there are people willing to go…and others willing to send them. I am very thankful for your partnership in this process as we try to share God’s good news and peace to all. Please know that your involvement in missions is bearing fruit.
And for a closing note: I made a quick trip back to Arkansas at the end of March. I know I had just been home 6 weeks before, but I had some important business to take care of. I am happy to share with those of you who don’t already know that I proposed to my girlfriend, Melissa Hardage, and am now engaged to be married at the end of the year. God is good and has poured out His blessings on me…blessings far greater than I could have asked for or imagined. I was worried that I might be dooming myself to bachelorhood when I agreed to move down here alone over 3 years ago. I tried to put my faith that God could bring me a wife wherever I was, if He so chose. He has chosen to do so and I am very thankful. Please pray for us...especially her as I have lived alone a long time and hope I am not to set in my ways! May God bless all of you with as much kindness.
In Him,
