Dear friends and family,
This month I traveled the 9 hours north to the epicenter of February’s massive earthquake. A group of Christians from the US was coming to try to help with the recovery effort. Even four months after the earthquake, there are thousands of displaced families trying to survive the winter in tents and shacks. Many of the children and elderly people lack sufficient food and shelter. In the cold rainy winters, even a cold can be dangerous.
I arrived 12 days before the team to scout out the area and visit with the Christian brothers. This is the same location where my friends Tom and Pam Hook spent several years working as missionaries. The church here exists because of the efforts of PV through the Hooks. The Christians in Lota and Coronel are some of the most mature in all of Chile due to their long-term efforts in the mid 80’s. One of these families, the Carrasco’s, was kind enough to host me for the three weeks. I have attached a picture of these kind people at the bottom of my letter.
After a weather delay in Atlanta, the 50+ member team finally arrived in Lota, Chile. This wonderful group of workers had three teams set to help with a medical effort, evangelism, and benevolence. The men and women came with servant hearts and gave all they had for 6 days to serve as many people as possible. Much good was done, but I am afraid the area will be decades trying to recover from such a major disaster. The area was one of the poorest parts of Chile before the earthquake and it is apparent they have taken large step back. Please continue to remember these people in your thoughts and prayers.
Puerto Montt was left to fend for itself for several weeks. While I was gone, the church agreed to host another speaker from the capital city of Santiago. He spent a few days here with the brothers in study of God’s word. I am sure the church in Puerto Montt got along just fine without me and enjoyed the guest speaker.
God Bless each of you. Thank you for taking the time to read my report each month. I know sometimes it isn’t all that interesting but it is nice for me to feel that there are others back in the states that know about my work down here. I would like to thanks again to all those who are supporting me. My work would be impossible if it wasn’t for all the prayers, notes, and financial support that you send my way.
In closing, I want to mention a friend of mine that passed recently. My dear friend and sister in Christ, Annette Craig was so kind to me throughout our 6 year friendship. My heart truly goes out to her family. I pray that the peace of God will comfort them until they are reunited again.
In Him,
Andrew Levi Sherrill
