Dear Friends,
I have to start off with a big thank you to the group of you that went to help with the clean up in my hometown of Mena, Arkansas. For those of you who didn’t know, the small town I grew up in suffered a direct hit by a Tornado a few weeks back. It was hard for me to be so far away and not be able to help the people I grew up with. The fact that some of you went to help when I couldn’t means more to me than you know. Thank goodness that no one I knew were among the hurt although many lost their homes. I am sure it will look different when I am home in November.
We have a new sister in Christ as Graciela decided to put her faith in God in the first days of April. She is a kind lady in her retirement who spends most of her days taking care of her 12 year old granddaughter. She has showed herself a very good student of the bible. Because she married at 19 and started young with all the responsibilities of being a mother and a homemaker, she never got the chance to study as she wanted and seems to love being a student in the Bible Institute. Please pray for her as she starts her walk with our Lord.
I have added some pictures for you. The first ones are of some old wooden churches that are very common here in the small towns that pepper the country. I find them very interesting and I hope you enjoy the pictures. Most of them are still in use by the Catholic church.
There is also a picture of Rooney. A brother that was baptized a few months ago. This is on a walk we took after a bible study down to his rocky beach. He has become one of my best friends here and I hurt for him as I watch cerebral palsy slowly take his abilities. His mind stays intact and we have wonderful talks. I don’t know much about this illness but he is only 46 and I notice him worsening as the weeks pass. He has been my best student in the Friday night classes.
The Bible institute is continuing well. I enjoy my preparation time and I have learned much as I have to answer all questions in my mind before class. One of the most interesting topics that has come up so far is the Jewish practice of Tithe. We started the course with a comparison of the Old and New Testaments and the common mistake of the christian world today to confuse the covenant God made with the Jewish nation with the more perfect covenant he made with the whole world. (Heb. 9:15-28) And how this new covenant was the more advanced call for people to be pure. As demonstrated in Mathew 5:21-31, we are called to fulfill much of the older law, but to a higher standard. Not only should we not murder, we should not hate. Not only should we not commit adultery, we should not lust. Just as a senior in High school must use the basic principles of math when learning much more complex concepts in Trigonometry. Christians must continue in the concepts taught by the old law, but not limit themselves to only that level. We are not called to give 10% of our harvest to God, but 100% of all we have should be regarded as belonging to Him. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. 2 Cor. 5:15 Everything we own, every day we get up, every breath we take has been entrusted to us to use for his purposes. It is an elementary concept to give 10%. We have been called to move on to the next class. The concept for giving in the New Testament is not a set amount, but comes from the heart. (2 Cor. 9:7) As we mature in God, we will slowly let go of our hold on ‘our’ positions in this world and come to understand that all we have is His.
I am afraid to many of us are satisfied with giving 10% of ourselves to God. We are college grads spending our time on 2 + 2. (1 Cor. 13:11)
Think big my friends. Go read Heb. 11 about the great men and women of Faith and remember that we are surrounded by these great witnesses. (Heb 12:1-3) Find ways to give of yourself. That is worth much more than your money and it is something that we all have.
In Him,
Andrew Levi Sherrill
