LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE Wednesday Night, April 14, 2004 “Overcoming the Sin of Racism” 5 Minutes Welcome and Prayer 10 Minutes OPEN Share your definition of racism. Give a recent example of racism that you have personally witnessed. What was your response?
Do you believe racism and prejudice is sin? 15-20 Minutes DIG One reason racism is wrong is because it is fueled by pride which deludes people into believing they are superior to their fellow man. Why do we allow these elitist thoughts and attitudes to enter our mind? What is the danger of having a superiority complex?
While most of us recognize and disdain blatant racism and prejudice, are there certain subtle areas where you still struggle being completely accepting and loving? For example, how do you feel about interracial couples, quotas, and affirmative action?
Looking at Galatians 3:26-28, Romans 3:9-12 and Acts 10:34-35, how should we respond?
Does the imagery from Revelation 7:9-10 encourage you today? How do we negotiate the balance of a heavenly perspective that is still concerned about matters on earth? Even if we think that we are individually immune to racism, are we called to fight against it in our social lives? If so, then how?
Because of this discussion, let’s also use this as an opportunity to discuss other prejudices we might have? What are some other factors for which we discriminate against others? Might our discriminate against others based on socio-economic factors be even more prevalent? 15 Minutes REFLECT Chuck mentioned in his sermon, “We all have our baggage.” What are some of the things that you saw and heard from your childhood that affect your attitude toward racism and prejudices today?
The next time you hear someone make racist remarks, how do you think you will respond? How do you think Jesus responded to racism?
This is a very personal matter. It will be on an individual basis that we’ll make the most difference overcoming racism. More than can any institution. If this is true, what are some practical steps you can take to make a difference? 10 Minutes PRAYER TIME Have you been convicted by the discussion tonight? If confession is an appropriate response for you, for what can we specifically pray? Do you know someone whose attitude you would like to influence for the better? Can we pray for you and your relationship with that person?
