Dear Friends and Family:
I would like to thank you for your support in donations, prayers and encouraging notes for the Haiti Christian Development Medical Mission. The mission has been an empowering experience for me, allowing me to put in perspective how Jesus had to bear with the crowds while healing, feeding and ministering to countless people wanting him to fulfill their needs. God has blessed us with great wealth as a country and individuals, and I believe mission work – with no doubt – is one way we can show God’s love for all.
On Friday, March 6, our medical mission team arrived in Port-au-Prince, and stayed the night, then traveled to Gonaives – a city approximately 70 miles north of Port-au-Prince. The journey to Gonaives took approximately 4-1/2 hours as a result of the undeveloped roads which created a dusty and bump journey most of the way. Once arriving in Gonaives on Saturday and checking into the Paradise Hotel, we began unpacking and sorting the medications to be dispensed at the medical clinic.
Sunday, we attended Poteau Church located in a region outside Gonaives where Gueston Pacius translated the message being delivered by Pleasant Valley’s own Dean Wright. Poteau Church is growing with great strides, attributable to the great work of Gueston Pacius. The structure of the new church building has been in development for some years, a section of land has been purchased and a six-hole latrine has been completed by the faithful Christians. Sunday evening we began setting up the medical clinic at Liberty Street Church where Emmanuel Alexander is the minister. After closing the clinic, we traveled back to the Paradise Hotel to prepare for Monday’s medical clinic at Poteau Church.
On Tuesday the medical team set up clinic at The Farm. On The Farm, Hervey Madden taught a designated driver the fundamentals of the new tractor that was received about two weeks before we arrived. Agriculture is the principle economic activity in Haiti; most Haitians own and farm tiny pieces of land. The Farm is approximately 10 to 12 acres in size and contains two water wells, one pump and an in-ground open well that’s presently dried up. Gueston Pacius has done a great job with The Farm by way of the support of the King from the nearby community.
In four days the medical clinic provided services to approximately 2,500 to 3,000 people who came to the four locations: Liberty Street Church, Poteau Church, Bayonaise and The Farm. Our Missions Minister, Roger Pritchett, taught a Preacher Training Class at The Farm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Twenty-six preachers attended and received a certificate of completion. Prolonged economic inequality, political instability and constraints, and a near-lack of medical care continue to be a serious problem for Haiti.
I want to share with you an illustration regarding how God is moving in the poverty-stricken community. A group of ladies from the Poteau Church prepared dinner Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the Mission Team at the Farm to show thanks.
The residents of Haiti are desperate for help. I enjoyed working there and am ready to return.
