LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE
Wednesday Night, April 12, 2006 “I Can’t Be Happy Unless Things Go My Way ” 5 Minutes - Welcome and Prayer 10 Minutes - OPEN What makes you happy? Identify a recent period in your life where you were happy. What was the wellspring of that happiness? Would you consider yourself to be happy tonight? If not, why not? 15-20 Minutes - DIG Why is it so easy to allow circumstances to dictate our happiness? Have you noticed that some of the happiest people in the world – ( ) surround themselves with family and friends; ( ) pursue personal growth and intimacy; ( ) judge themselves by their own standards; ( ) serve others; ( ) live thankful lives; ( ) live with purpose; ( ) are forgiving? If you agree these things are central to finding true happiness, are they the important anchor points to which you’ve devoted your life? What is the relationship between happiness and contentment? What is contentment? What is it not? What does Paul say about contentment in Philippians 4:10-13? Why is materialism toxic to happiness and contentment? Read Ecclesiastes 5:8-20. What were the lessons Solomon had learned about all the stuff we so often associate with happiness? 15 Minutes - REFLECT Why do you believe happiness is so elusive to some people? Read Colossians 3:1-4. Where is the real source of happiness and contentment? Why is it necessary to die to self to find these things? Why does gratitude have so much to do with life satisfaction? Read Eph. 5:4, 20; Col. 3:17; and 1 Thes. 5:16-18. Is this a grace that characterizes your life? If not, why not? What keeps you from being grateful? How can we adopt a philosophy of life that enables us to anticipate trials and misfortunes and grow from such with joy and grace instead of adopting an unrealistic expectation that we deserve everything to go our way? What have you observed and learned about the primary differences between these two philosophies of life? Our prayer lives reveal the reality that many of us believe the lie that everything should go our way! If you doubt this fact, what are things you’ve prayed about this week? What are the “anchor truths” you have gleaned from this study? CLOSING PRAYER Submit these matters to God! Pray for specific needs that were revealed during the meeting. |
