“It Is My Christian Duty to Meet All the Needs of Others”
5 Minutes - Welcome / Prayer
5 Minutes - OPEN
Has there ever been someone close to you who had the propensity to take on way too much? Describe as best you can their personality traits and tendencies that caused them to react in this way.
From where do some get this misguided sense of “duty” that drives their actions and reactions to the issues that come their way?
15 Minutes - DIG
Read Exodus 18:13-26. What problem did Moses face in leading Israel?
What advice did Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, give to him as he shouldered the responsibility of leading the Israelite people?
Though we are instructed in scripture to “carry one another’s burdens” (Gal. 6:2), what care must we exercise to (1) not over-extend ourselves and (2) potentially harm someone else by not allowing them to take responsibility for their own circumstances?
One person who struggled with the “never say no” lie was Martha, the close friend of Jesus. Go back and read Luke 10:38-42 to examine Jesus’ encounter with Martha and her sister, Mary and see how he contrasted their behaviors. What lessons do you learn from such?
What are some of the truths revealed in I Corinthians 12:27-31 and Romans 12:6-7 that will enable us to not grow weary in well doing?
15 Minutes - REFLECT
What are the dangers that exist for someone prone to take on way too much?
Who all suffers from living with someone or working with someone like this? How?
That person who is prone to over-extending themselves is susceptible to go so hard at some point they physically “hit the wall.” If you know someone who has this tendency, what can you do to help them avoid burnout?
How do some manage to turn Christianity into something heavy and burdensome?
5 Minutes - CLOSING PRAYER
Even Jesus escaped the crowds and the pressures around him and escaped to the mountains to pray. Allow tonight’s prayer to be dedicated to our communication with God about our need for rest and renewal.
