It’s What’s Inside That Counts |

Anyway, I believe you don’t fix the inside by putting something on the outside.
~ Elle MacPherson
Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
~ 1 Sam. 16:7
Anyone interested in impressing with outward appearance is familiar with Aston Martin, the maker of sports cars favored by Prince Charles and James Bond. The English automaker is famous for its high-performance cars like the 750-horsepower One-77 coupe, and luxury models such as the $285,000 DBS, 007’s latest Aston.
It is safe to say if Sesame Street’s game “Which one of these doesn’t belong?” were applied to Aston models, the easy answer would be their newest, the Cygnet Urban Subcompact, described as a “luxury city car.”
Compared to every other car Aston makes, the Cygnet stands out. It is tiny, it is underpowered, and it is, comparatively, inexpensive. It also gives Aston a more eco-friendly product providing buyers with a “green halo,” according to Peter Schmidt, editor of Automotive Industry Data. He explains: “The attitude of the super-rich has changed. They really do want to be seen to be green. People can turn up at their gold club in this car, and it will be a talking point, and Aston Martin owners love talking about their cars.”
What is puzzling about all this is the fact that the Cygnet is not only based on the Toyota iQ, it is virtually identical to it, sharing the same engine, transmission and frame. Not only that, but the Cygnet and iQ have body styles that are nearly identical. They are, for all practical purposes, the same car.
It should be noted, however, that the Cygnet has a really nice hand-stitched leather interior made from seven cowhides.
The Aston Martin Cygnet retails for $50,500. The Toyota iQ, for $20,500.
Despite the cars being the same on the inside, a few exterior baubles (and the Aston Martin logo on the grill) are going to persuade the status-conscious consumer to pay fifty thousand dollars for a twenty-thousand-dollar car.
Wow.
Any lessons for us here? How much time, effort and money do we spend on externals while neglecting what is inside?
Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
~ Prov. 4:23
You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean.
~ Matt. 23:27
Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
~ 1 Tim. 4:8
