LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE

“The Good Ole Days”

5 Minutes  Welcome & Prayer

10 Minutes OPEN

For those living during the decade of the 1950s, what do you remember the most about that era in your life?

If you were not alive during the 50s, then what is your impression of the era, from stories you’ve heard?”

Based on what’s happened thus far, how do you think this decade will be remembered?

It’s always interesting to travel back in time and take a nostalgic look at “the good ole days” and compare how times have changed.

However, consider Solomon’s council, “Do not say, ‘Why were the old days better than these?’ For it is not wise to ask such question” (Eccl. 7:10). Why is this wise advice?

15-20 Minutes  DIG

In the decade of the 50s, a great emphasis was placed on evangelism. How can we now best encourage and motivate one another to maintain an “evangelistic fervor”?

What must be our attitude as we approach and reach out to those for whom spirituality is unexplored or recently awakened?

One of the questions we’ll have to ask ourselves is - - “What does it mean to be distinctively Christian?”

What can we do immediately to recommit our efforts to being a people who “know the book (Bible)”? To improve upon this spiritual discipline, how can we raise the standard we set for our children, teenagers, and for one another?

What is the place of memorization of scripture? Was most of your memory work done in the King James Version? When did you commit to memory most of the scripture memorization that you have done in your life?

The church carries out God’s hospitable work by constantly extending His invitation to the world. In being hospitable people, we mirror God’s actions towards us by saying, “I invite you to know me, to come into my home and share in my life.” Hospitality is one way to be intentional about developing relationships.

If it were true that Christians fifty years ago were more hospitable than we are now, what can you do to reverse this trend? What decisions will you have to make to become more hospitable?

Notice these two verses which highlight this being an important Christian attribute – Romans 12:13 and I Peter 4:7-11.

15 Minutes REFLECT

Read Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 20-25.

What must happen in your house to prioritize the exploration of scripture to better come to know Jesus Christ and to grow in His image?

What will it take for you to begin thinking creatively about new methods of sharing the redemptive message of the gospel with others?

10 Minutes PRAYER TIME

What is your prayer for our generation? How do you want to be remembered? For what things would you like for us to be remembered that probably aren’t as prominent as they should be?

Read in closing this passage – Ephesians 5:8-21. Shine on!
