LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE
Wednesday Night, March 24, 2004
“Protecting the Institution of Marriage”

5 Minutes  Welcome & Prayer

10 Minutes OPEN

What bothers you most regarding the efforts by some to legalize same-sex marriages?

Do you know anyone who is homosexual? If so, how do you interact with them? Do you talk openly about their choice to live this lifestyle?

What would you do if you were a parent of a 25-year old son living in Dallas, Texas who called home to inform you last week that he was dying of AIDS and that he needed your help? How would you react? What if he asked to come home for you to help take care of him during his final days?

15-20 Minutes  DIG

Who instituted marriage (i.e., Gen. 2:20-24; Matt. 19:4-6)? Where is our first line of defense in protecting the institution of marriage?

How might this line of defense be challenged? How should we respond to these challenges?

As a Christian, we cannot agree with the homosexual movement. The Bible teaches that same-sex relations are sinful (Rom. 1:24- 28; I Cor. 6:9-11). But shame on us for not always succeeded in “hating the sin, but loving the sinner.”

If we are not to be hateful and unkind in our response to those who have adopted this lifestyle, how then should we act? What examples from the ministry of Jesus might be helpful in framing our response?

Should we feel guilty if we are disgusted and appalled by homosexuality? How should we deal with our initial emotional and instinctual responses to homosexuality and the people who practice it? How can we love homosexuals in spirit and truth?

15 Minutes REFLECT

While many voices are being raised in objection to homosexual marriage, a difficult question has been raised by homosexual activists: “What about traditional marriage is there to be proud of?” This is a sad indictment of our times. Why?

Are you offended by gay jokes? Have you ever heard your (or a) teenager call someone “gay” or a “fag”? Why have our children become so flippant about using this terminology? Do you see this as being offensive?

How can we minister to those here in Little Rock who have chosen this sinful lifestyle?

10 Minutes PRAYER TIME

Is your marriage strong and vibrant and is it a role model for the younger generation? If not, what are the weaknesses in your marriage for which this group can pray?

What are the attitudes and behaviors we have demonstrated related to this issue for which we should confess to one another?
