LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE Wednesday Night, May 5, 2004 “Getting the Job Done: The Story of Nehemiah” 5 Minutes Welcome and Prayer 10 Minutes OPEN Think of a time when you saw a community need that was not being met for which you thought our church should respond. How did you react? What did you do?
( )I called one of the ministers and told him about it ( )I called a state or federal agency ( )I did nothing ( )I stepped up and did something about it myself
Is there some need you’d like to see met that you’ve allowed to lay dormant for some time? Is this something you should do on your own? Or is it something for which you should call on someone else for help? What has kept you from moving on this matter? 15-20 Minutes DIG Like with Nehemiah (Nehemiah 1:1-11), has God ever given you or someone you know a vision of kingdom work to complete? To accomplish that work, what were some of the toughest obstacles to overcome?
Notice that Nehemiah developed a plan of action for how to respond in rebuilding the walls (2:1-20). What would you describe as Pleasant Valley church’s plan for making a difference in our community?
Why do you think we care so much about what others think of us? Do you allow critics to discourage you? Who are the major critics in your life? When facing ridicule and opposition, what strategies can we learn from Nehemiah 4:1-23?
Why do you think modern day Christians don’t respond to the reading of God’s word as they did in Nehemiah 8:5-6? Have you ever felt moved to lift your hands in praise to God or fall on your knees in confession during worship? Why do you think we sometimes hesitate to follow the promptings of our heart in a corporate worship setting? 15 Minutes REFLECT As cupbearer, Nehemiah had all the trappings of success that our society runs after. Do you think his life was more fulfilling and passionate in his cupbearer position, or in his quest to accomplish his God-given vision? What can we learn from his example and the words of Jesus in Matt. 6:25-34?
Nehemiah stayed focused, remembering what was important. In today’s society, what things tend to distract us from what is truly important? What are some practical steps we can take or sacrifices we can make to stay focused on what’s really important? 10 Minutes PRAYER TIME Encourage all group members to read the Book of Nehemiah during the coming week. Hear God calling for you to rise to action.
Would you characterize yourself as “spiritually alert” to God’s call on your life? How can you prepare for doing God's will more consistently?
