[Editor’s Note:  If you’ve noticed more people using their phones during church, you aren’t imagining things.  This was especially evident during the power outage that occurred in last Sunday’s 8:15 service.  These folks are utilizing some new technology to participate in the sermon in an interactive way. I would love to see even more people join us in this.  And what exactly is “this”?  Casey Rine explains it in a way even us Luddites can understand.  Read on… — Chuck]
Access to the Bible has not always been as easy as it is in today’s society.  Long ago, people craved portions of the scripture to read and absorb.  When Gutenberg’s printing press was invented, this allowed for greater access to God’s word.  Then William Tyndale printed the first English Bible, allowing even more people to read the text.  Each generation has worked for ways to help make the Bible to be more accessible.

Over the last decade, the Internet has brought about a revolution which empowers people like never before.  With the ability to share, contribute, create, broadcast and communicate, it’s easier to express who we are and what we believe with the rest of the world.

Here at Pleasant Valley, we would like to use some of this technology that is free and at our fingertips.  The YouVersion Bible app is a way that allows all of us to become more engaged with the lesson.  It’s a free app that you can download from your phone’s app store.  Once you’ve downloaded the app, you’ll have access to a variety of different study tools, versions, and other information that will help you with your personal study.

One of the features the YouVersion Bible app offers is “YouVersion Live.”  This allows different congregations the ability to distribute information that they would like for their members to know.  Each Sunday morning PV will be using this feature in conjunction with the sermon being presented.  This will include the scriptures being used in the lesson, poll questions, questions that help engage members more into the    sermon, and a place to submit prayer requests that you might have.  We want to encourage you to use this app to interact with the rest of the congregation throughout each Sunday morning lesson.

Here’s how you can get involved:
1.    Download the Bible app by YouVersion to your phone.  It is free and the most commonly used Bible app for all smart phones.  If you already have a Bible app on your phone check and see if it is the YouVersion app.  If so, then you’re ready.  If not, then you’ll still have to download YouVersion.
2.    Open the app, and click on the “Live” icon. (For iphones, it’s on the 2nd page)
3.    Click on search for live event.
4.    Type in our zip code 72212 or you can type in Pleasant Valley Church.
5.    Then you’ll click on the sermon title that you want to interact with.
It’s that easy!  Another feature is that you can access this on the web as well.  You can go to www.youversion.com and access these same live events.
I pray that we will all challenge each other to get into the Word.  This is just another way that we can read and study the scriptures.  Our hope is that this will encourage you and help you engage in the lesson each Sunday morning.

When Evil Is Redefined As Good

1/22/2012 - by Chuck Monan, Preaching Minister

Am I sexually attracted to underage boys?  Sexually attracted?  You know, I enjoy young people.  I, I love to be around them.  I, I… But no, I’m not sexually attracted to young boys.

— Jerry Sandusky

He called a little child and had him stand among them.  And he said, “Whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.  But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”

— Matthew 18:2-3, 5-6

Allegations that Sandusky, the former Penn St. assistant football coach, repeatedly molested young boys during his years at the school, have triggered a sense of national outrage rarely seen.  But even as prosecutors are investigating this sickening saga, activists are working to eliminate the shame attached to pedophilia.  The December 17, 2011 issue of World reports,

A nonprofit in Westminster, Md., called B4U-ACT has been advocating since 2003 on behalf of those it calls “minor-attracted people” – adults or adolescents who feel sexual attraction toward children.  Relying on questionable psychiatric estimates, the group claims up to 8 million men in the United States experience such attractions, but feel stigmatized by society and are afraid to visit a mental health clinic.

“We see minor-attracted people as whole human beings, not as dangerous criminals or ‘deviants,’” says the organization’s website.  The group affirms that therapists should report confessed or planned illegal activity to police, yet “we recognize that laws… do not require the reporting of sexual feelings and desires.”  Further, “we are not advocating treatment to change sexual feelings.”

The point could not be clearer: there is nothing wrong or deviant about such feelings and attraction.

Except that there is.

Despite the insistence of some that nothing is wrong in terms of human sexuality, the witness of Scripture says otherwise.  The call to “Flee all sexual immorality” (1 Cor. 6:20) uses a word that applies to all sexual sin, including pedophilia.

World’s Daniel James Devine notes that representatives from the “minor-attracted people” community arranged a conference call last year with editors of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to discuss changes to the pedophilia entry in the handbook.  (They were largely ignored).

It bears mention, though, that homosexuality shook off its status as a mental illness in 1973 when the American Psychiatric Association removed its entry from the DSM.  Social acceptance wasn’t far behind, with gay marriage gaining support in droves.

What will happen if activists are successful in casing pedophilia as just another sexual orientation?  The Bible gives an unmistakable warning to our increasingly confused society:

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

— Isaiah 5:20
