The Human Condition

09/14/2008 - By Chuck Monan, Preaching Minister

I have discovered that all the unhappiness of men arises from one single fact, that they cannot stay quietly in their own chamber.

 ~ Blaise Pascal, Pensées

It is no easy task to walk this earth and find peace.  Inside of us, it would seem, something is at odds with the very rhythm of things and we are forever restless, dissatisfied, frustrated, and aching.  We are so overcharged with desire that it is hard to come to simple rest.  Desire is always stronger than satisfaction.

~ Ronald Rolheiser, The Holy Longing

One of the uncomfortable facts about ourselves is that we all must live in a way that meets our own approval.

~ Paul Holmer, Making Christian Sense

Does discovering who you are awaken a kind of inner unrest? If you started accusing yourself of all that is in you, would your nights and days be long enough?

~ Brother Roger of Taizé, Essential Writings

A man’s at odds to know his mind ‘cause his mind is aught he has to know it with.  He can know his heart, but he don’t want to.  Best not to look in there.

~ Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

One of the strangest things that people say is, “I’m a good person.”  I am always amazed when  people claim to know that about themselves ....  History demonstrates, repeatedly, that if enough people begin to define themselves as “good” in contrast to others who are “bad,” those others come to be seen as less than human.

~ Kathleen Norris, Amazing Grace

The power of temptation is not in its appeal to our baser instincts; if that were the case, it would be natural to be repulsed by it.  The power of temptation is in its appeal to our idealism.

~ Helmut Thielicke, Our Heavenly Father

The evil wrought by those who intend evil is negligible.  The greater evil is wrought by those who intend good, and are convinced they know how to bring it about; and the greater their power to bring it about, the greater the evil they achieve while trying to do it.

~ Allen Wheelis, The Way We Are

To triumph fully, evil needs two victories, not one.  The first victory happens when an evil deed is perpetrated; the second victory, when evil is returned.  After the first victory, evil would die if the second victory did not infuse it with new life.

~ Miroslav Volf, The End of Memory

Perfect love may cast out fear, but fear is remarkably potent in casting out love.

~ P.D. James, Time to Be in Earnest

Satan does not here fill us with hatred of God, but with forgetfulness of God.

~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Creation and Fall / Temptation

An 'Awesome Church'

09/07/2008 - By Chuck Monan, Preaching Minister

A community is only a community when the majority of its members are making the transition from “the community for myself” to “myself for the community.”
~ Jean Vanier

An old joke features a man stranded on a deserted Pacific island.   Finally one day a boat comes sailing into view, and the man frantically waves and yells, managing to draw the skipper’s attention.  The boat comes to the island and the sailor comes ashore to meet the lonely, stranded man.  After a few minutes of conversation the sailor asks, “What are those three huts you have here?”

“Well,” he answered, “that one is my house.  This one is my church.”

What is the other one?  the sailor asked.

“Oh, that’s where I used to go to church.”

This joke would likely be funnier if it didn’t hit so close to home for many.

Churches are easy targets for people to shoot at.  If everything isn’t done just to their liking and according to their preference, some walk away.  And when they launch into their litany of complaints, there is usually no shortage of folks eager to listen.

Certainly no church is perfect, PV included.  But sometimes the voices of a few critics are given a disproportionate hearing, especially in light of the growing number of people who love their congregation and commit themselves to their brothers and sisters.  The week of August 17 we had 1,352 souls in attendance.  And three days later on a Wednesday night, 945 took time out of their schedules for life groups and Bible study.  The 945 is an all-time midweek record at PV.    This isn’t happening by coincidence.  It is because the Lord is at work in the life of this church.  Two weeks ago, Bill Worlow and Tod Durham responded to Christ’s invitation.  Before 2007, Bill had been away for ten years; Tod said “It’s been twenty-one years since I’ve been a part of a church - but I want to be part of this one.”

I get chills in reading Tod’s words again.

All of us recognize that, both individually and collectively, we have far to go in becoming the kind of people God calls us to be.  But it is encouraging to be reminded that great things are happening at PV.  Brent Adams, a PV member who suffered a horrific motorcycle accident, sent me an email the other day from his rehab program in Atlanta.  It sums up the way a lot of people feel about this church:

I am writing this message to tell everyone in the PV singles class and everyone else just how much I miss my church family at Pleasant Valley!!  Each and every day I think of you and all you have done for me!  I have decided to put my roots down in Little Rock based on the love and support that was shown for me from my Pleasant Valley family.  I want to be a part of the most AWESOME CHURCH I have ever been a part of and give back to everyone and more importantly to GIVE BACK TO GOD!  My goal is to get plugged in and really try to make a difference within our church and the community.  I feel that this accident was God’s way of shaping me for work in his kingdom.  I cannot wait to get back to Pleasant Valley and hug each and every one of you!  PLEASE PLEASE do not take Pleasant Valley for granted!  Other people would give so much to be a part of a church family like Pleasant Valley!  It wasn’t till I left that I realized just what I was missing out on!
