“My Worth is Determined by my Performance”

5 Minutes - Welcome and Prayer

10 Minutes - OPEN

What are the primary roles in life where you feel the pressure to perform? How would you describe this pressure?

On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the highest), rank the severity of this pressure.

How much of this pressure is self-imposed? Or is this pressure truly an “expectation” that has been placed upon you by someone else?

15-20 Minutes - DIG

What is the basis of our human worth?

From where are we programmed to believe that our “self-worth” is contingent on our performance?

At what point in our life is such instilled within us? What implications does this have on us as parents as we nurture and raise our children?

Does a “code of conduct” carry with it an inherent expectation to perform? If so, in what way?

So does our Christianity instill within us a desire to perform?

Is what we do more important that who we are? Doing is usually connected with a vocation or career – how we make a living? Being is much deeper. It relates to our character, who we are, and what we are becoming. Doing is tied closely to activities, accomplishments, and tangible things. Being, on the other hand, has more to do with intangibles.

Read Ecclesiastes 2:11; 5:10-20

What are the driving factors that motivate you to perform at a high level? Are these spiritual or worldly motivations? If they are spiritual, site scriptural support for such.

Have you ever noticed that one of the reasons why we set such high performance standards for ourselves is that we are competing against someone else? Why do we compare ourselves to others?

See Galatians 6:1-5; 2 Corinthians 10:12

15 Minutes - REFLECT

This subject is very integrated with our philosophy of life. Have you ever taken time to write down the basic tenets of your philosophy of life? If you were to do so (knowing what you know now), what would you identify as the central truths that have enabled you to establish a healthy self-worth?

As a child of God, do you fully understand the significance of having a Heavenly Father who covers us with unconditional love; who sent His son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins; and who anointed us with the gift of His Holy Spirit?

Do you see the incredible value He places on you?

While we caution against basing our worth on performance, few people who are healthy enjoy mediocrity.

Where is it appropriate to set a standard of excellence that challenges and stretches us to new heights?

CLOSING PRAYER

Submit these matters to God!

Pray for specific needs that were revealed during the meeting.
