LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE Wednesday Night, October 1, 2003 "Becoming the Body" Application Point: As a result of this study, group members should know that we are a part of the “body of Christ” and each member should be active in the body. 5 Minutes Welcome & Prayer
10 Minutes OPEN
Share a story about a time when you realized that a part of your body you thought was insignificant was very important (i.e., stumped a toe, appendix attack, tooth ache, skin rash from poison ivy, etc.)
15-20 Minutes DIG
Read Ephesians 4:11-16. Paul indicates in this text that the purpose of apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers is to “prepare God’s people for works of service.” If this is the primary role of church leaders, describe in practical terms how in our church this training and equipping happens? How can we know when this goal is accomplished?
For what purpose is this training and equipping necessary? Who are the real “foot soldiers” that are on the front-line and in the trenches radically making a difference in our community?
When Chuck portrayed in his sermon that the ministry staff is the least connected with our secular community on a daily basis, how did that strike you? Who are the ones really interacting with the lost in our community?
What constitutes spiritual maturity? Contrast a person who is spiritually mature with someone who is spiritually still an infant? Consider how future generations suffer for our current immature ways.
15 Minutes REFLECT
A recognized church growth expert in our fellowship, Flavil Yeakley, found that the participation of church members in a congregation’s works of service is in direct proportion to the number of available roles that the members know about. Do you feel informed about the numerous opportunities to serve others? Real ministry happens when we witness for Christ and become salt, light, and leaven for those with whom we come in contact. What excuses do I give for not serving in this way?
10 Minutes PRAYER TIME
Mention the empty chair. Be fishing!
Mention in prayer tonight one person that is on your heart and with which you want to be intentional in serving this week. How has God uniquely enabled you to make a difference in this person’s life?
