Political correctness does not legislate tolerance; It only organizes hatred.
~ Jacques Barzun
Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?
~ Galatians 4:16
A few years ago Susan and I were in New York City, where I was speaking over the weekend at Springfield Gardens. That Friday morning we wandered over to 30 Rockefeller Center where the Today show was being broadcast. There were young girls everywhere. A veritable multitude of them, all in an extremely excited condition. Guessing that neither Matt Lauer or Al Roker were the draw for them, we asked someone in the crowd why all these tweens and teens were here en masse.
“They’re here to see Justin Bieber,” came the answer.
We looked at each other and said simultaneously: “Who?”
By now you probably know who that is: “Bieber Fever” has established this young Canadian as the latest singing sensation in a chain from N’Sync to New Kids on the Block to Leif Garrett to Shaun Cassidy to David Cassidy to the Beatles to Elvis to Frank Sinatra to some anonymous minstrel in the Middle Ages ad nauseam.
Given his music and his Bama Bangs, ordinarily I wouldn’t spend much time talking about Bieber. But in a recent Rolling Stone interview, the 16-year-old pop sensation said something that is bound to mark him as an enemy to many who would otherwise be fans. Bieber is a heartfelt Christian who reads his Bible and tries to communicate “God loves you” to his audiences. When asked his views on abortion, Bieber answered:
I really don’t believe in abortion. I think [an embryo] is a human. It’s like killing a baby.
The response was predictable. Writers, bloggers and assorted media personalities criticized his lack of sophistication, questioned his intelligence, asserted that his opinion should not be considered, and demanded an apology.
Political correctness only organizes hatred - Bieber is being vilified for stating what everyone knows is true: an abortion takes a human life. A fetus isn’t a giraffe or a rhinoceros; it is a human.
Our country, where over 50 million babies have been killed since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in 1973, needs to listen to Bieber on this subject.
Not because he’s adorable or popular or sells boatloads of records.
Because he’s right.
