“Rules for Successful Living”
5 Minutes - Welcome / Prayer
5 Minutes - OPEN
What would you identify as a primary “rule” by which you live your life (i.e., I will tell the truth in all situations)?
Maybe before you answer that question, take a minute and share with one another how you define a “rule.”
Are rules established in your house just for “judicial” purposes? If not, for what reason(s) do you impose rules in your house?
15 Minutes - DIG
It is interesting to read Moses’ statement in Deuteronomy 6:1-3 as to why God provided the Israelites with the Old Law (also refer to Paul declaration in Galatians 3:19-25 as to the purpose of the Old Law).
With that perspective on the Old Law, now read Paul’s word in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22 where he outlines a set of rules for successful living.
Allow everyone in the group to share their definition of success.
Would you agree that real success should not be measured in terms of fame or fortune, rather by . . .
. . . harmony,
. . . happiness,
. . . and hope?
Using Paul’s word in 1 Thessalonians as a central text, what does he say in this section regarding the respect we owe elders in the church?
In what ways can you better show respect and appreciation of our elders?
What responsibility do you feel toward the members of your LIFE Group? What are the ways you are currently watching out for one another?
Talking Points:
* Warn those who are idle (v. 14);
* Encourage the timid (v. 14);
* Help the weak (v. 14);
* Be patient with everyone (v. 14);
* Be kind to all (v. 15).
15 Minutes - REFLECT
At this point in your life, based upon your faith and worldview, if asked to identify your successful accomplishments in life, what would you list?
If Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians 5 are truly meant to be a formula for success, how are you doing?
Share with your LIFE Group the one area where you have the most room for growth.
Why is it necessary to allow God’s Word to be the foundation and guiding light for your evaluation of your success as a Christian (remember your calling is to be God’s ambassador called to make a difference in this world)? See 2 Corinthians 5:16-21.
5 Minutes - CLOSING PRAYER
What is the proper place of prayer in determining the direction and core values of your life?
Allow everyone in the group to share their personal prayer request(s) as it relates to their journey toward success.
