“The DaVinci Code and Ephesians: Unity in Christ”
5 Minutes - Welcome and Prayer
10 Minutes - OPEN
Why do you think The Da Vinci Code has been so popular?
Do you think Satan used this book and movie to accomplish his purpose? If so, how?
Bob Hooper called The Da Vinci Code “pretty good entertainment, but bad history and even worse theology.” Do you agree with this assessment? Why or why not?
15-20 Minutes - DIG
While The Da Vinci Code states that it is a book of fiction, and that “any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or locales, is coincidental” still it is based upon enough factual, historical data to make it seem plausible. What other books/movies recently have been structured in this way? Why is this a potentially dangerous thing?
How do you react to this statement of one of the characters in the book:
“The Bible is a product of man, my dear. Not of God. The Bible did not fall magically from the clouds. Man created it as a historical record of tumultuous times, and it has evolved through countless translations, additions, and revisions. History has never had a definitive version of the book.”
The Da Vinci Code is considered to be anti-Christian and very anti-Catholic. How do you see that to be true – or not?
There is much concern today that Christians are influenced more by the world than they are influencing the world. How does this book show that we are allowing the world to dominate us?
What should be the Christian reaction to entertainment like The Da Vinci Code? Ignore it? Boycott it? Protest it? Read, see it, and view it as an opportunity to knowledgeably engage those outside of Christ with the truth about Him?
Much of The Da Vinci Code story hinges on matters of church history – some of which are not accurately described or portrayed. How can the church do a better job of educating members and those outside of Christ about church history?
15 Minutes - REFLECT
In Ephesians 1-2, Paul speaks of “grace and peace.” How can we have greater peace than people who are in the world?
In Ephesians 2, he talks about our unity in Christ. Does Christianity really unite people more than worldly philosophies like those presented in The Da Vinci Code?
In Ephesians 4, Paul appeals for unity in Christ. What do we as a church need to do to be more united
a. with each other?
b. with others in Christendom?
In Ephesians 5, the apostle speaks of the church as a family. The story of The Da Vinci Code is that Jesus supposedly had an earthly family of His own – wife, child. How can we see Jesus as an example for families if He did not have one?
Paul ends the book of Ephesians as he begins it, with the concepts of grace and peace. Why do so many people seek grace and peace outside of the church rather than in it?
CLOSING PRAYER
Submit these matters to God!
Pray for specific needs that were revealed during the meeting.
