The first time that the word “worship” occurs in scripture is when Abram is leaving his servants to sacrifice his only remaining son, Isaac:
Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.”~ Genesis 22:5
Worship has never really left the context of sacrifice, though it centers now on God’s sacrifice for us: His Son. Still, we may be called upon to sacrifice something in worship to Him: our preferences, our self-reliance, our pride. And what He provides us is ultimately far better.
