Walls of Grace
January 26, 2020 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
An event every month that begins at 5:00pm on day Last of the month, repeating until January 31, 2020
5-7 p.m. | Room 001 (under the gym)
On the last Sunday of each month, PV members gather with our friends who call the streets, parks, abandoned vehicles and other less hospitable places of Little Rock “home.” While many of our unsheltered friends are unemployed some of our friends are what we call working poor. This means they have jobs, but also have too much month at the end of their money to make it without a little help. While this is not always the biggest challenge they face it is one of many. And it is just one of many areas where we can make a difference.
Our friends come either on foot, bike or by vehicle (we pick them up) and we are here to invite them in, say hello, build relationships with them, love them, and just encourage them to come in and relax in a safe place for a couple of hours, away from the heat, rain, or cold, depending upon the time of year. They show up and we love it when they do.
And that is what we tell them. We tell them they’re loved and thank them for coming. And best of all some of them invite their friends! It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with serve people who really need it most. You would be surprised how much fun it is!
While the food is prepared, everyone visits, then when preparations are ready, a prayer is offered, and everyone is welcome to enjoy a sit down family-style meal. After the meal, we offer clothing (shirts, pants, belts, etc.), including backpacks and sleeping bags when available, and hot showers (along with hygiene supplies). They are always grateful to see shoes and the occasional jar of peanut butter (when someone wakes up hungry during the night, a spoonful or two can tide them over till morning). Most shower after eating and then everyone says their goodbyes and gather all their belongings along with leftovers and head out.
While they are leaving, all the volunteers help clean up the kitchen, dining area, and the showers. That’s pretty much it. It’s a lot of fun. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, just talk to Scott Karnes or Joe Lee. Donation needs can be found in the weekly bulletin and can be dropped off in the wooden bins at the entrances at any time (just stick a label on it).
We would love for you to drop by. You don’t have to stay the whole time. Stop by, help out, make a new friend. You will bless them and in return will be blessed. See you soon. Thanks! – Linda Lane, Walls of Grace Volunteer
